According to a survey conducted by LearnVest and The Guardian Life Insurance Company of American (Guardian), most 20- and 30-somethings have not taken any steps to protect their assets if they are unable to work due to illness or injury. 

Some of the most common causes for disability are muscle, back and joint disorders, cardiovascular and circulatory diseases and cancer cited by the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA)'s 2012 Long Term Disability Claims Review.

In 2010 the Department of Labor (DOL) estimated that 3 to 5% of an employer’s workforce was absent on any given day.  According to a 2010 Mercer study, employee absences are costing employers 35% of total payroll while those absences which are unplanned and extended (such as FMLA and STD) comprise 8.7% of total payroll.
